In recent years, critics have put an end to several stereotypes concerning the philosophy of the Enlightenment. Those clichés often lay far from the actual ideas of the Enlightenment philosophers. Nevertheless, a number of subjects remain which require further research. This paper is an attempt to throw light on Denis Diderot's considerations on the sense of history, inasmuch as they exceed the frames of interpretation used by the scholars so far
